Te Tumu Paeroa offers graduates opportunity to build kete of knowledge in Māori land administration

“Whenua Māori is taonga tuku iho and we want to tautoko aspiring future leaders in whenua Māori to develop skills for the wider benefit of Māori,” says Te Tumu Paeroa Chief Executive Dr Charlotte Severne.

The new 12-month programme will enable graduates with a passion for protecting whenua to gain experience and knowledge in all areas relating to Māori land administration, how it relates to their chosen discipline and build transferable skills that can benefit whānau, hapū and iwi.

“This programme is one way we can contribute to continued improvement in Māori land administration and help our rangatahi carve a valued career pathway in whenua management and governance”, said Dr Severne.

Te Tumu Paeroa Pou Tikanga, Te Hāmua Nikora will awhi graduates throughout their 12 months with the organisation to ensure their journey is grounded in tikanga Māori.

The programme name, Taupae Pia, represents the hill or ridge graduate students can look out to survey the future while still connecting to the past.

“The programme is designed so participants will gain rich experience in all aspects of our mahi – from working directly with owners, engaging with the Te Kooti Whenua Māori (Māori Land Court), understanding governance and financial management, to supporting Māori agribusinesses”, says Taupae Pia programme manager, Sara Passmore.

Applications for Taupae Pia are open online from 13 July to 16 August 2020, with the first cohort starting in February 2021.

“Mā te hōtaka nei mātou e awhi atu i te kounga ake o ngā kaiwhakataka whenua Māori me te whakatakoto huarahi whai mahi whakahaere whenua,” tā Dr Severne.

Mā te Pou Tikanga o Te Tumu Paeroa a Te Hāmua Nikora ngā pia e tauawhi hei ō rātou marama ngāhuru mā rua, e tūturu ai ngā tikanga Māori hei mahere i tō rātou haere.
