Te Tumu Paeroa welcomes new Māori Trustee
Dr Charlotte Severne, the newly appointed Māori Trustee, started her first day at Te Tumu Paeroa today with a pōwhiri held at Pipitea marae in Wellington.
Dr Severne (Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Ngāi Tūhoe), her whānau and supporters were welcomed onto the marae by staff from Te Tumu Paeroa, where she has taken up the chief executive position.
Te Tumu Paeroa is an independent organisation led by the Māori Trustee, that manages over 90,000 hectares of Māori land on behalf of nearly 100,000 owners.
On taking up the position of Māori Trustee, Dr Severne said “I’m attracted to looking at what the future is like for us. This is the most exciting time for Māori development. And now we’re stepping into something that is our time. I’m here to make a difference and to continue to manifest the potential of this office.
“This work sits right at the intersection of things I’m most excited about for New Zealand. Whānau empowerment, tino rangatiratanga, optimising how we use and care for our land, commercial success, creating legacies of cultural and physical wealth all underpinned by strong workforce and capability development”
