He Aituā Moana Jackson
It is with great sorrow that we acknowledge the passing of Moana Jackson, a prominent and highly regarded Māori lawyer and academic.
Ira, he tōtara ka hinga, ka rarā atu ki te ao.
Ira, he reo ka tangihia, tangihia kia rangona e te ao.
Ira, he huarahi kua parahia, waiho hei whai mā tātou.
E te rangatira... Haere, okioki atu.
There, a tōtara has fallen, let it reverberate around the world.
There, a voice cries, crying for the world to hear.
There, a path has been travelled, leave it for us to follow.
Dear chief... Go, take rest.
It is with great sorrow that we acknowledge the passing of Moana Jackson, a prominent and highly regarded Māori lawyer and academic.
Dr Charlotte Severne has paid tribute to Moana Jackson and his work. He always showed incredible strength and determination in his fight for the rights of all indigenous peoples.
He was a mentor and leader to so many and will be deeply missed.
This has been an incredibly sad few days for all Māori, with the loss of three great rangatira. They leave a legacy that we must continue to honour.
Our thoughts are with Moana’s whānau, friends and former hoamahi.
